  2. SYMPTOMS. There is painful spasm or contraction of the anal sphincter (or
  3. control muscle) that is especially painful on defecation.
  4. CAUSES. The passage of large hard stools may cause a small tear of crack
  5. (that becomes inflamed and deepens) in the mucous membrane of the rectum or
  6. the skin around the anus.
  7. TREATMENT. A stool softener and an anesthetic ointment may be prescribed.
  8. .A low-residue diet may be required.
  9. .Repair by relatively minor surgery may be required.
